At forty two years of age and big with child, Charity had begun to feel her age. It had been nearly eight years since the birth of Emily, whose name had been shortened to Emmy. After several years, and she had not gotten with child, Charity thought her childbearing days were over- she was pleasantly surprised when she found herself with child again. This one would be the son whom she would name after her grandfather Robert and her husband Henry. The little house they had built in the foothills of the Piedmont Region of the Appalachians was reminiscent of the Finley’s cabin they had lived in on the Georgia Mountain. And, even though this one was a good mile from the river and the falls, Charity had made it into a home; however, she still held onto the hope, that one day, she would be able to rise each morning and be able to sit on the porch, drink her coffee, smoke her pipe and have the Fall s within sight. The cabin that Henry, Jeremiah, and the boys built four years earlier had two good-sized main rooms and a loft for the children; Jeremiah’s bed was in a corner of the living area, near the fireplace where he could keep warm. He was pretty much crippled by arthritis and was not able to get around as good as he used to- it kept him bent over and hobbling whenever he moved around; he said that keeping warm helped with the pain and stiffness.
